About Tapena thwaitesi Moore, 1881

Males of Tapena thwaitesi Moore, 1881 have a dark purple brown upperside, with blackish outer margins and an indistinct transverse discal band of spots. The forewing has two small translucent white spots on the costa near the apex. The underside is dark purple brown. Females have a greyish purple brown upperside and underside; their transverse band of spots and outer border are dark purple brown. The female forewing has three small semi-diaphanous white subapical spots, with the lowest spot being transversely narrow. There are also two spots at the end of the cell, with the upper spot very slender, plus two spots on the disc; each of these spot series is bordered by the dark band. The female hindwing has a semi-diaphanous spot at the end of the cell.
