About Tapeinochilos ananassae (Hassk.) K.Schum.
Tapeinochilos ananassae, with the scientific name Tapeinochilos ananassae (Hassk.) K.Schum., has common names including backscratcher ginger, torch ginger, and Indonesian wax ginger (the name it is called in Hawaii). It is an evergreen herb belonging to the plant family Costaceae, and was formally described as a distinct species in 1866. It is native to three regions: New Guinea, Maluku province in Indonesia, and Queensland, the Australian state. It is a perennial plant that grows up to 2.4 meters (8 feet) in height, and can reach a spread of up to 2.1 meters (7 feet). Its inflorescence forms a cylindrical structure made up of stiff, bright red bracts, which enclose yellow flowers that emerge from within the bracts.
