About Tandonia sowerbyi (A.Férussac, 1823)
Tandonia sowerbyi (A.Férussac, 1823) is a keeled slug that grows to 80 mm (3.1 in) in length. It inhabits open environments including grasslands and shrublands, and can be very abundant in arable land and gardens. This slug is native to Europe, and was likely originally restricted only to Greece. It is now widespread across southeastern and Atlantic Europe, including Great Britain, Ireland, Italy, Portugal, the Netherlands, and the Balkans. It is also present in New Zealand and South America. The species has not yet become established in the United States, but it is considered to be a potentially serious threat as a pest and invasive species that could harm agriculture, natural ecosystems, human health, or commerce. For this reason, it has been suggested that the species should be given top national quarantine significance in the USA.
