Long-eared chipmunks (Tamias quadrimaculatus Gray, 1867) differ slightly in size between males and females. Males have a total body length ranging from 23.0 to 23.9 centimeters (9.1 to 9.4 inches), while females have a total length ranging from 23.0 to 24.5 centimeters (9.1 to 9.6 inches). The tail makes up a large portion of each individual’s total length: male tails range from 8.5 to 10.0 centimeters (3.3 to 3.9 inches), and female tails range from 9.0 to 10.1 centimeters (3.5 to 4.0 inches). Male body mass falls between 74.1 and 89.0 grams (2.61 to 3.14 ounces), and female body mass falls between 81.0 and 105.0 grams (2.86 to 3.70 ounces). In terms of color and markings, these chipmunks are bright red-brown. They have five dark stripes and four pale stripes along their backs, plus large, distinct white patches at the base of both ears.
