This species, scientifically named Talochlamys multistriata (Poli, 1795), is commonly called the dwarf fan shell. It is a small bivalve mollusc that can grow up to 35 mm in length. It has one ear-like protrusion located at its hinge. Its shell features fine longitudinal ridges, and its colour varies between yellow and purple. This species occurs along the southern African coast, ranging from Saldanha Bay to Delagoa Bay, and lives in water shallower than 20 m. Ecologically, the dwarf fan shell inhabits areas under stones and among algae. When disturbed, it can swim by clapping its two valves together.
