About Taleporia tubulosa (Retzius, 1783)
Taleporia tubulosa, commonly known as the large birch bright, is a small nocturnal moth species belonging to the bagworm moth family Psychidae. This moth occurs locally across Europe, ranging from southern Scotland through west and central Europe, eastward to Russia and the Balkans. In the north, its distribution extends to Fennoscandia. In mountainous regions, it can be found at elevations up to 1,800 meters above sea level. Male moths have greyish brown, frayed-looking wings, with a wingspan between 15 and 19 millimeters. As is typical for most bagworm moths, females of this species are wingless. Caterpillars of Taleporia tubulosa feed primarily on lichens from the genus Parmelia, and may also consume plant remains. The caterpillars live inside a protective casing constructed from grass or bark, which is usually attached to a tree. Adult females stay within this casing throughout their lives. Males fly from May through June each year.
