About Tagiades gana (Moore, 1865)

This species is scientifically named Tagiades gana (Moore, 1865). In 1891, Edward Yerbury Watson published the following detailed description of the species. Both males and females have a dark brown base wing color. On the upperside of the male's forewing, there are three tiny semi-transparent spots placed obliquely before the apex; there is also a transverse discal series of streaks, a small patch inside the cell, one patch near the wing base, and the exterior margin is blackish. The male's hindwing has its lower third colored pure white, with a straight boundary separating this area from the brown basal portion. The apical margin, three spots on the upper part of the disc are black, and there are two spots on the middle of the white anterior margin. The underside of the wings is paler brown, and the semi-transparent spots on the forewing match the pattern seen on the upperside. On the underside, the hindwing is white with brown suffusion along the anterior margin, and the upper discal and marginal black spots match the pattern seen on the upperside. Females are paler overall than males. Their upperside is somewhat greyish-brown; the forewing has the same spots and blackish discal streaks as the male, and the hindwing has the same upper discal spots as the male. The exterior margin of the female's hindwing is greyish-white. The underside pattern of females matches that of males. For both sexes, the cilia are pure white on the lower portion of the hindwing, and brown on all other portions of the wings. Dioscorea alata is a known host plant for the larvae of this species.
