About Tabanus sudeticus Zeller, 1842

This species, commonly known as the dark giant horsefly, has a body length ranging from around 20 to 25 millimeters. It has uniformly dark brown eyes. The dark giant horsefly is a common species that can be found buzzing around cows and horses. It typically feeds only on the blood of horses and cows, and avoids biting humans. It produces a very loud buzzing sound when flying. Tabanus sudeticus occurs across many countries in Western Europe, with a distinct distribution concentrated in the northern and western parts of the region. It can be found as far north as Southern Norway and the Western Isles of Scotland, and there are occasional recorded sightings of the species in Belarus.
