About Syzygium hodgkinsoniae (F.Muell.) L.A.S.Johnson
Syzygium hodgkinsoniae is a small tree that grows to 11 metres tall, with a trunk that reaches 15 centimetres in diameter. Its bark is dark brown and smooth. The trunk may be cylindrical, but can also be irregular in shape. Its leaves are unusual for myrtles native to New South Wales, as they are large, thick and heavy. Individual leaves measure 8 to 15 cm long and 3 to 6 cm wide, with a short blunt point at the tip. Oil dots on the leaves cannot be seen with a hand lens. Both the lateral leaf veins and the midrib are visible on both sides of the leaf, though they are more prominent on the leaf's underside. This species is a rheophyte, growing in riverine subtropical or gallery rainforest. It inhabits deep, rich alluvial and basalt soils, at altitudes up to 300 metres above sea level.
