About Syrphus vitripennis Meigen, 1822

This species is scientifically named Syrphus vitripennis Meigen, 1822. For explanation of morphological terms used, see Morphology of Diptera. Adult wing length ranges from 7.25 to 10.25 millimeters. The frons above the lunulae is black. Tergites 3 and 4 have complete yellow bands, and the lateral margins of the tergites are black. In males, the third femur is black for its basal three-quarters. In females, the third femur is black for its basal two-thirds. Illustrations of the male genitalia and larva of this species were published by Dusek and Laska in 1964. Consult the references provided for species determination. This species occurs throughout the Palearctic realm. In the Nearctic realm, it ranges from Alaska to California. It is migratory.
