About Syngrapha ain (Hochenwarth, 1785)

This moth species, Syngrapha ain, has a wingspan ranging from 34 to 40 mm. The upperside of its forewings is gray-brown, marked with strongly serrated wavy lines and a distinct silvery white marking shaped like the letter gamma. Its hindwings are yellow, with a wide black border. The thorax is covered in hair and bears a few hair tufts, and the proboscis is well developed. S. ain is a day-flying moth, active on the wing from July to August, with timing varying by location. The larvae are green, with yellowish longitudinal lines and double dorsal lines. They feed on species of the genus Larix (larch). The pupa is dark brown. S. ain is a Eurasiatic species. It occurs locally in subalpine and alpine larch forests of the Alps, the northern Carpathians (including the Krkonoše and Tatra Mountains, and is found sporadically in southern Slovakia and northern Hungary), extends eastward into the southern Ural Mountains and southern Siberia, and also inhabits the Korean Peninsula and Japan in the Far East.
