About Syndemis musculana (Hübner, 1796-1799)
Syndemis musculana is a moth species belonging to the family Tortricidae. In 1879, Baron Walsingham misapplied the name S. musculana to the species S. afflictana. This moth occurs in Europe, China’s Heilongjiang, Jilin and Inner Mongolia regions, the Korean Peninsula, Japan, Russia’s Amur region, and North America. Its wingspan ranges between 15 and 22 millimeters. The species has no striking wing patterns, is quite variable in color, and is therefore difficult to identify. The head, thorax, and forewings are more or less brownish grey. A fairly distinct, wide brown cross-band runs across the middle of the forewing. Hindwings are pale grey-brown. In temperate areas of its range, such as Belgium and the Netherlands, adult moths fly from April to July. Caterpillars of this species feed on oaks (Quercus), birches (Betula), spruces (Picea), ragworts (Senecio), and Rubus (brambles and their close relatives). Less commonly, they have been recorded feeding on plant refuse and dry leaves.
