About Synanthedon tipuliformis (Clerck, 1759)
This species, Synanthedon tipuliformis, has a wingspan ranging from 17 to 20 millimetres (0.67 to 0.79 inches). The moths have transparent wings, with scales only present on the wing veins, the discal spot, and the wing edges. These scales have a shiny blue-black appearance. Weak reddish or yellowish longitudinal stripes form at the apex of the forewings. An elongated black-brown discal spot runs from the front to the back edge in the center of the forewings. The hindwings have a narrow dark marginal band and a small black-brown discal spot. The antennae are black, with a dusty yellow tint on the underside. The black thorax has yellow stripes along its sides. Males have thin yellow rings on the second, fourth, sixth, and seventh segments of their black abdomens, while females have matching colored yellow rings on the second, fourth, and sixth abdominal segments. The tufts are strongly fan-shaped and blue-black in color.
