About Synanthedon scoliaeformis (Borkhausen, 1789)

Synanthedon scoliaeformis, commonly known as the Welsh clearwing, is a moth belonging to the family Sesiidae. This species occurs across nearly all of Europe; it is absent from the Netherlands, Portugal, and the western region of the Balkan Peninsula. Its range extends eastward through Russia all the way to Japan. The wingspan of adult Synanthedon scoliaeformis ranges from 30 to 36 millimetres. The larvae of this moth feed on two tree species: Betula pubescens and Betula pendula. The larvae bore into mature host trees and feed on the inner bark of the tree.
