Symphyotrichum urophyllum is a perennial herbaceous plant species that grows between 40 and 120 centimeters (1+1⁄4 and 4 feet) tall. This plant is cespitose, with 1 to 5 erect stems growing from the same base. It has broad, thin, toothed arrow-shaped leaves attached to a broadly winged petiole. A dense, pyramidal inflorescence of composite flowers is a distinctive feature of this species. Its ray florets are white, while its disc florets range from white to cream and turn pink as they mature.
Symphyotrichum urophyllum is native to Ontario, Canada, and the United States, where it ranges from Maine to Florida and west to Nebraska. It grows in open, dry to mesic habitats, including meadows, open woodlands, bluffs, forest edges, and roadsides.
