Symphyotrichum simmondsii (Small) G.L.Nesom is a colony-forming herbaceous perennial plant that grows from long rhizomes, reaching heights between 10 centimeters (4 inches) and 120 centimeters (4 feet). Its composite flowers have an average of 18 to 38 pale lavender, lilac, or pale purple ray florets, which are also called petals. The central portion of the flower is made up of disk florets; these start out yellow and turn reddish as they mature, with roughly 24 to 37 five-lobed disk florets per flower. S. simmondsii has a base chromosome number of x = 8, with an octaploid total chromosome count of 64. This species occurs in both moist and dry habitats at elevations no higher than 50 meters (164 feet), and it is found in the southeastern United States, most notably in peninsular Florida.
