About Symphyotrichum racemosum (Elliott) G.L.Nesom
Symphyotrichum racemosum is a perennial herbaceous plant. It typically reaches 30–90 centimeters (12–35 inches) in height, and rarely grows as tall as 100 cm (39 in). It may grow in clumps with woody caudices, or form colonies if its root system develops long rhizomes. One to three upright, hairless (glabrous) or nearly hairless (glabrate) stems usually grow from its root base; if stems are glabrate, any hairs present are arranged in vertical lines.
Symphyotrichum racemosum is native to most of the eastern and east-central United States, and has been introduced to Canada. It generally grows at elevations between 0 and 200 meters (0 and 656 feet). It is a wetland species that occurs in alluvial soils, brackish marshes, savannas, and bogs. It can also be found in wet meadows, swamps and swamp borders, and prairie swales. Additional habitats it grows in include open coastal pond shores.
