About Symphyotrichum chapmanii (Torr. & A.Gray) Semple & Brouillet
Commonly called savanna aster, Symphyotrichum chapmanii is a perennial herbaceous plant. It grows from a cespitose root system with rhizomes, and typically reaches 30–80 cm (12–31 in) in height, producing one to three hairless stems. Its flower heads feature cylinder-bell shaped involucres, which hold 4–6 rows of green phyllaries with purple tips. The plant blooms from September through December. Each flower head contains 8–23 purple to pale bluish-purple ray florets that measure 10–20 mm (0.4–0.8 in) long, which surround 47–57 pale yellow disk florets.
