Symphyotrichum anomalum (Engelm.) G.L.Nesom is a perennial herbaceous plant that grows between 20 and 120 centimeters (3⁄4 to 4 feet) tall. Its lower leaves have untoothed margins and heart-shaped bases. Its flowers, which are attractive to butterflies, contain ray florets that are most often lavender, blue, or purple, and are rarely white; the disk florets are cream or light yellow, and turn pinkish-purple over time. This species is native to the U.S. states of Arkansas, Illinois, Kansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma. It grows in dry limestone-derived soils as well as acid soils, at elevations ranging from 50 to 500 meters (160 to 1,640 feet).
