It is native to the eastern Atlantic Ocean, occurring from the Bay of Biscay to Morocco, and also lives throughout the coastal waters of the Mediterranean Sea and the Black Sea. This species inhabits rocky areas, usually within eelgrass beds, at depths between 1 and 30 meters (3.3 to 98.4 feet). It can grow to a maximum standard length of 17 centimeters (6.7 inches), though most individuals do not exceed 12 centimeters (4.7 inches).
