About Sympetrum danae (Sulzer, 1776)
This species, Sympetrum danae, has consistent features across both sexes: all individuals have black legs, black pterostigmata, and a very broad base to the hind wing. The sides of the thorax are yellow, separated by a distinct bold black panel that holds three yellow spots, a pattern that resembles the highland darter, Sympetrum nigrescens. Males of this species have a mostly black thorax and abdomen. The abdomen bears small yellow marks along its sides, and these marks darken as the male ages. Male wings are clear. Females of Sympetrum danae have black legs and brown eyes. Their abdomen is mainly yellow, and it becomes browner as the female ages. Females also have small yellow patches at the bases of their wings.
