Sylviparus modestus Burton, 1836 has olive-green plumage from crown to back, with a slightly greyer forehead. Its wings and tail are greyish brown with green edges, and there is a faint yellow tint at the base of the tail. The face is olive-green marked with yellow flecks; it has a short, faint yellow line above the eye, and a thin yellow ring around the eye. Its throat and underparts are dull olive-yellow, and the belly is paler. When feathers are worn, the bird appears duller, has a smaller eyebrow line, and browner wings. Males and females are identical in appearance. Juvenile birds are similar to adults, but have more pointed tail feathers. This species inhabits temperate mountain forests and lower mountain forests, occurring in southern Asia, primarily in the Himalayan mountains. It is most often found in areas with oak and mixed tree types. At higher elevations, it can be found in mossy forests with epiphytes, and scrub near the tree line. It also lives in willow thickets and apricot orchards. In southern China, it occurs in spruce and fir forests. Outside of the breeding season, it lives in deciduous and evergreen forests, large gardens, and hillside bushes, most often at lower elevations. Its recorded elevation ranges are 1200 - 2400 meters (3937 - 7874 feet) in Western Kashmir; 1500 - 2800 meters (sometimes up to 4265 meters) or 4000 - 8000 feet (sometimes up to 14000 feet) in Nepal; and it occurs down to 900 meters (2953 feet) in the Eastern Himalayas and other adjacent areas.
