About Sus barbatus Müller, 1838

The Bornean bearded pig, with the scientific name Sus barbatus Müller, 1838, is also called the Sunda bearded pig or just bearded pig, and it is a species belonging to the pig genus Sus. This species can be identified by its prominent beard, and individuals sometimes have tassels on their tails. It lives in Southeast Asia, occurring on Sumatra, Borneo, the Malay Peninsula, and various smaller islands including Tawi-Tawi in the Sulu archipelago, where it inhabits both rainforests and mangrove forests. Bearded pigs live in family groups. They become able to reproduce at 18 months of age, and they can crossbreed with other species in the family Suidae. In East Kalimantan, the reticulated python is counted among the potential predators of the Bornean bearded pig.
