About Sunira circellaris (Hufnagel, 1766)

This moth species, Sunira circellaris (Hufnagel, 1766), has a wingspan ranging from 34 to 44 mm. Its forewings are yellow ochreous or ferruginous, and are sometimes heavily dusted with fuscous markings. The wing lines and edges of the stigmata are rufous; the inner line is waved, the outer line is lunulate-dentate, and the submarginal line is wavy and ochreous, with a rufous line running along its inner edge. The lower portion of the reniform stigma is blackish, and a small dark spot sits near the base of the forewing. A median shade is generally present on the forewing. The hindwing is grey, with an ochreous costal area and a rufous ochreous fringe. The paler ochreous form is the type specimen, while deep ferruginous individuals correspond to the form ferruginea. In specimens similar to Agrochola macilenta Hbn., the forewings are darkened by fuscous shading, particularly along the inner and outer margins, and the hindwings are blackish grey. The form ab. fusconervosa Petersen has all wing nervures dark across their entire length. In the rare form nigridens Fuchs, the cross lines are distinctly black and dentate.
