Sulla coronaria (L.) B.H.Choi & H.Ohashi is a perennial herb native to Malta, Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, southern Italy, and Spain. It is cultivated for animal fodder, hay, and honey production. This deep-rooted, drought-resistant plant grows to 1–1.5 meters tall. It bears imparipinnate leaves with 7–11 leaflets. Its flowers are red, with a standard 12–15 mm long. Its fruits are jointed, formed of 2–4 spinulose articles. The pods have a yellow thorny surface that turns brown when they reach maturity.
