About Succinea putris (Linnaeus, 1758)
The shell of Succinea putris measures 10–17 (up to 27) mm in length and 6–8 mm in width, and contains 3 to 4 whorls. The whorls are relatively flat with shallow sutures. The body whorl is very large, and the aperture accounts for much more than 50% of the total shell height, while the spire is small. The shell is colored amber yellow. The visible soft parts are yellow with a reddish tint that lightens toward the lower sides, though individual animals may also be dark grey. This species has a Palearctic distribution in the Euro-Siberian region, and has been recorded in Belgium, the Czech Republic, Finland, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Ukraine, Russia, Canada, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Great Britain, Ireland, and Estonia. It inhabits very damp locations, including vegetation growing on river banks and in marshes. In laboratory conditions, the lifespan of Succinea putris ranges from 13 to 17 months.
