About Styrax suberifolius Hook. & Arn.

Styrax suberifolius Hook. & Arn. is a tree species belonging to the family Styracaceae. It is native to southern China, Taiwan, Vietnam, and Myanmar. This tree grows to around 4–20 meters (13–66 feet) in height. When affected by a species of samurai aphid, the tree develops very large galls. The aphid in question is reported as Ceratoglyphina bambusae, but it is likely actually Ceratoglyphina styracicola. The galls formed can grow up to 10 centimeters long, and can house between 100,000 and 200,000 aphids. These aphids are social insects that have a distinct warrior caste.
