Scientific name: Stylosanthes fruticosa (Retz.) Alston. Stylosanthes fruticosa has the synonym Arachis fruticosa, and is commonly called African stylo, wild lucerne, or shrubby pencil‑flower. It is a flowering plant species in the family Fabaceae. Its native range includes Cape Verde, sub-Saharan Africa, Madagascar, the Arabian Peninsula, India, Sri Lanka, and Myanmar, and it has been introduced to Hawaii. Livestock find this plant very palatable. It can tolerate light shade, acid soils, and even light frosts. It grows at elevations from sea level up to 2,000 m (6,600 ft), and can survive on as little as 300 mm (12 in) of rain per year.
