About Stygionympha vigilans Trimen, 1887

Stygionympha vigilans, commonly known as the western hillside brown, is a butterfly species that belongs to the Nymphalidae family. This species is located in South Africa. Its range spans from the Cederberg south to the Cape Peninsula on the seaward side of mountains in the Western Cape, and extends along the Drakensberg mountains to Grahamstown in the Eastern Cape. The wingspan of Stygionympha vigilans measures 45 to 48 millimeters. Adult butterflies are active between October and December, and also between August and April each year, with activity peaks occurring in October to November and February. It is likely that this species produces multiple generations each year. The larvae of Stygionympha vigilans feed on grasses from the Poaceae family. They have also been successfully reared in captivity on the species Ehrharta erecta and Ischyrolepsis cinncinnata.
