About Strobilurus conigenoides (Ellis) Singer
The scientific name of this fungus is Strobilurus conigenoides (Ellis) Singer. Its cap ranges in color from white to yellowish and can grow up to 12 millimetres (1⁄2 inch) wide. The stem is translucent when young, turns yellow as it matures, and retains a distinct white band around its top. This species produces a white spore print. Most sources widely report that Strobilurus conigenoides grows specifically on Magnolia follicles, with recorded examples on Magnolia fraseri, Magnolia grandiflora, Magnolia tripetala, and Magnolia acuminata. However, a 1991 published study documented the species growing on fruits of Liquidambar styraciflua, also known as American sweetgum.
