This species has a broad native distribution across Asia, ranging from the Russian Far East and Korea, through China, down to Indochina and the Himalayas. Three infraspecific subdivisions of this species are currently accepted. Streptolirion volubile var. angustifolia Aver. is native to Vietnam. Streptolirion volubile subsp. khasianum (C.B.Clarke) D.Y.Hong is distributed from the eastern Himalaya to south-central China and Vietnam; this taxon is a stronger climber than the nominate subspecies subsp. volubile, and is covered in erect brown hairs.
