About Stonemyia tranquilla (Osten Sacken, 1875)
Stonemyia tranquilla, commonly called the peaceful stonian horsefly, is a species of fly belonging to the family Tabanidae. Adults of this species reach approximately 1.5 centimeters in length. Unlike most other tabanid flies, this species does not require a blood meal to reproduce; this trait is the inspiration for its scientific species epithet, which translates to "tranquil". This species is distributed across the United States and Canada. It is most abundant in New England, New York, the St. Lawrence River Valley, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick, though it can occasionally be found in the Midwest and the Appalachian Mountains as far south as North Carolina.
