About Stilpnochlora couloniana (Saussure, 1861)

Stilpnochlora couloniana is a species of phaneropterine katydid that belongs to the family Tettigoniidae. Its native range includes southeastern United States (Florida and Georgia, where it is the only member of the tribe Steirodontini found in the country), the Bahamas, and Cuba. This species is commonly called the giant katydid, a name that is also shared with several other species, and it is the largest katydid native to the United States. Adult males have an average length of 6.6 cm (2.6 in), while adult females average 7.8 cm (3.1 in) in length. Individuals native to Cuba typically grow 5–10% larger than individuals from the United States, and these katydids are sometimes kept as pets.
