About Stigmella tiliae (Frey, 1856) Beirne, 1945

Stigmella tiliae is a moth species belonging to the family Nepticulidae. It is distributed across almost all of Europe, with the exception of the Balkan Peninsula and the Mediterranean Islands. The wingspan of adult moths ranges from 4.2 to 5 millimeters. Adults can be seen active in two separate flight periods: from May to June, and again from July to August. This species produces two generations each year. The larvae of Stigmella tiliae feed on the following Tilia species: Tilia alba, Tilia americana, Tilia cordata, Tilia x euchlora, Tilia platyphyllos, Tilia tomentosa, and Tilia x vulgaris. The larvae live inside host plant leaves and create leaf mines. Each mine takes the form of a corridor that gradually widens as the larva develops.
