About Stigmella intermedia (Braun, 1917) Wilkinson et al., 1979
Stigmella intermedia is a moth species belonging to the Nepticulidae family. It occurs in North America, specifically in the U.S. states of Ohio, Arkansas, and Kentucky, as well as the Canadian province of Ontario. The wingspan of this moth ranges from 3 to 3.5 millimeters. It typically produces two generations per year: its larvae mature in July, then the species overwinters. Occasionally, a third generation may develop. The larvae of Stigmella intermedia feed on two plant species: Rhus typhina and Rhus aromatica. The larvae create mines inside the leaves of their host plants. When the leaf epidermis is loosened by mining, it is bright green at first, then turns yellowish. This loosened epidermis is marked by a broad blackish frass line that is almost as wide as the mine itself. The larvae themselves are a very bright green color.
