About Stigmatomma pallipes

Stigmatomma pallipes, also known as the vampire ant, is a reddish-brown ant species that generally ranges from 4.5 to 6 mm (0.18 to 0.24 in) in length. Individual ants are typically found in wooded areas, within damp soil and leaf litter. Nests of this species are usually located in soil under rocks, rotting logs, or at the base of trees. Colonies are small, typically containing between two and sixty individuals, although colonies of sixty individuals are uncommon. The species occurs across most southern and eastern U.S. states, extending west to California and north to the Canadian provinces of Quebec and Ontario.
