About Stethophyma grossum (Linnaeus, 1758)
This species, commonly known as the large marsh grasshopper, has the scientific name Stethophyma grossum (Linnaeus, 1758). It is a large insect with strong size difference between sexes: females reach a body length of 25.9–39.1 mm (1.02–1.54 in), while smaller males only grow 11.8–25 mm (0.46–0.98 in) long. In the United Kingdom, this size makes it the largest native grasshopper species, and it is also the largest grasshopper species found in the British Isles overall. S. grossum is distributed across most of Europe, with a small number of recorded sightings from western Asia. Within the British Isles, it is restricted to the New Forest, Dorset, Somerset Wells, and Ireland. Across its entire range, its typical habitat is wet meadow and marsh. In southern England, the species is most often found in "quaking" sphagnum moss bogs.
