About Stenopus spinosus Risso, 1827

Stenopus spinosus Risso, 1827 can reach a maximum length of 8 centimetres, which equals 3.1 inches. Its body is primarily yellow, with white antennae and white tips on its chelae, or claws. The tips of its uropods and telson are red. This species is commonly found in shallow waters of the Mediterranean Sea, and occurs at greater depths in the adjacent areas of the Atlantic Ocean. It is frequently seen during night dives in some regions within its range. A past record of this species from the Red Sea was actually a misidentification; the specimen collected there was a different species, Engystenopus spinulatus.
