About Stenocereus aragonii (F.A.C.Weber) Buxb.
Stenocereus aragonii, also previously classified as Marshallocereus aragonii, is a columnar cactus. Its dark green shoots reach 5 to 6 meters tall, rarely growing taller than 6 meters, and have a diameter of 12 to 15 centimeters. It branches very little from the base, and usually does not develop a distinct trunk. Shoots often have a pattern of diagonal, light-colored bands that mark the end of each annual growth period. The cactus has 5 to 8 rounded ribs that are 2 to 3 centimeters high. It bears 1 to 3 gray central spines that are 2 to 3 centimeters long, plus 5 to 9 shorter marginal spines that can grow up to 2 centimeters long. Its funnel-shaped flowers open at night, and measure 6 to 8 centimeters in length. The flowers have greenish-brown outer bracts, white inner bracts, and a tubercled, thorn-covered pericarpel. This species is native to northwestern Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and the Mexican state of Chiapas. It grows in dry forests at elevations between 50 and 800 meters above sea level.
