Stegastes adustus, described by Troschel in 1865, is commonly called the dusky damselfish or the scarlet-backed demoiselle. It is a species of damselfish that belongs to the family Pomacentridae. This fish lives on surging, wavy coral reefs at depths between 1 and 3 meters. Its range covers the Caribbean Sea, the tropical waters of the western Atlantic Ocean, and the Gulf of Mexico.
