This species, Statilia maculata Thunberg, 1784, shows clear size differences between adult males and females. Adult males measure 40 to 50 millimeters in total body length, while adult females range from 45 to 58 millimeters in length. The species is used as food in Nagano Prefecture, Japan. Before cooking, the wings, limbs, and guts are removed, and the mantis is cooked in sweetened soy sauce. The egg cases of this mantis are also used for medicinal purposes in both Japan and China.
