About Squalius carolitertii (Doadrio, 1988)
Squalius carolitertii, commonly called the Northern Iberian chub, is a species of freshwater ray-finned fish in the family Leuciscidae. This fish family includes daces, Eurasian minnows, and other related species. It is distributed in Portugal and Spain, where it goes by the common names bordallo, escalo, and gallego. Its natural habitats are rivers and intermittent rivers, and the IUCN has assessed this species as Near Threatened. This small endemic leuciscid lives in rivers across a large portion of the Iberian Peninsula, including the basins of the Douro, Mondego, Lima, Minho, and Lérez rivers. Recently, researchers have documented the first reported occurrences of this species in two additional locations: the upper reaches of the Alberche River, a Tagus basin tributary in central Spain, and the Oitavén River, a Verdugo River tributary in northwestern Spain.
