About Sporobolus alopecuroides (Piller & Mitterp.) P.M.Peterson

Sporobolus alopecuroides, commonly called foxtail pricklegrass, is a species of grass. It is native to Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa. It is also a common and widespread introduced species in the western United States, where it grows especially in sandy areas near water such as lakesides. Although it was once collected at shipping points near Philadelphia, it has not been observed there for roughly a century. This annual grass produces mostly upright, unbranching stems that are often dark in color, and reach a maximum height of around 75 centimeters. Its green leaves grow up to 12 centimeters long, and sometimes have a waxy texture. The plant's inflorescence is a dense cylindrical panicle made up of tiny green to purple spikelets.
