The scientific name of the surf clam is Spisula solida (Linnaeus, 1758). Spisula solida, commonly called the surf clam, is a medium-sized marine bivalve mollusc. It lives in the Eastern Atlantic Ocean, ranging from Iceland and northern Norway down to Portugal and Spain. It is also commonly found in the North Sea, the Baltic Sea, and the Irish Sea. This species inhabits sandy bottoms in the sublittoral zone. Adults grow up to 5 centimetres (2.0 inches) in length. Like many clam species, the surf clam is a sediment-burrowing filter feeder.
