About Spisula sachalinensis (Schrenck, 1862)

Arctic surf clams, with the scientific name Spisula sachalinensis (Schrenck, 1862), grow to around 10 cm and can live up to 30 years in shallow waters. This clam is eaten as food in Japan, most commonly in sushi or sashimi. Its raw foot is black, but takes on a characteristic red color when cooked. It is also added to rice dishes such as takikomi gohan. In Tomakomai, the Japanese city that lands the largest volume of this surf clam, the species is also processed into curry.
