About Spirobranchus lamarcki (Quatrefages, 1866)

Spirobranchus lamarcki is a species of tube-building annelid worm. It is widespread in intertidal and sublittoral zones around the United Kingdom and northern Europe. Individuals attach to firm substrates, including rocks, animal shells, and human-made structures. This species is often recorded for causing detrimental effects to shipping. It is closely related to Spirobranchus triqueter, and the two are often confused with one another. Spirobranchus lamarcki has been the focus of multiple scientific investigations, because it occurs near historic scientific study sites, has a relatively underived developmental mode, and a slowly evolving set of genes. In recent years, this organism has been the subject of in-depth transcriptomic research.
