About Sphrageidus similis Füssly, 1775

This moth species is white and very similar to Euproctis chrysorrhoea, but has a purer silky white color. In females, the anal wool and hairs at the apex of the abdomen are golden yellow. Color forms with small dark spots on the forewing are not rare, especially among males. The form "auriflua" has three spots arranged in an oblique transverse row at the inner angle, plus one spot in the basal area near the hindmargin. The form "nyctea" has only one spot at the inner angle, as well as one spot in the basal area identical to "auriflua". Form "trimaculata" resembles "nyctea", but has an additional spot on the costal margin opposite the subbasal inner marginal spot. Form "quadrimaculata" has a fourth subapical spot. The last two named forms originate from eastern Asia, where spotted specimens of this species are generally more common than they are in Europe.
