About Sphodros niger (Hentz, 1842)

Scientific name: Sphodros niger (Hentz, 1842). Males of this species have a body length of approximately 11 mm, which reaches 29 mm when their legs are fully extended. Their entire body is black, with the only exception being their chocolate-brown legs. Although Sphodros niger was first formally described in 1842, females of the species were not described until 1980. This delay occurred because males often wander to search for mates, while females live in tubes and are very rarely encountered.
