About Sphinx ligustri Linnaeus, 1758

This species has a wingspan of 12 centimetres (4.7 in), and its wings are generally held deflexed when at rest. It occurs in urban areas, forests, and woodlands. When disturbed, male privet hawk moths produce a hissing sound by rubbing together a set of scales and spines at the end of the abdomen. Larvae are most commonly found between July and August. When preparing to pupate, larvae bury themselves in soil. Adult moths emerge and fly in June of the following year.
