Sphenoclea zeylanica Gaertn. is a widespread flowering plant species in the genus Sphenoclea. It goes by the common names chickenspike, gooseweed, and wedgewort. It is native to Africa, Madagascar, tropical and subtropical Asia, and Australia. It has been widely introduced to the New World tropics and subtropics, ranging from the southern United States to northern Argentina. Its young leaves are edible, and are occasionally consumed, often after light boiling. It is a common weed of rice paddies, and can cause rice yield losses of 25 to 50%.
